Disney World

Blog Post #1

Walt Disney World is a 40-square-mile entertainment complex located in Orlando, Florida that features four central theme parks: the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Additionally, the resort contains two water adventure parks, 34 resort hotels, 5 golf courses, two spas, Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, and the dining and shopping center, Disney Springs. Walt Disney World has become the most visited vacation resort in the world, boasting an average annual attendance of more than 52 million people.

The parks were first owned by the Walt Disney Company and are now owned and operated by Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products. A supplement to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Walt Disney World was designed in 1955 and was called the “Florida Project” by Walt Disney. He intended to create EPCOT, “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow”, to be a utopian community that would form the foundations of new city living. His ultimate death resulted in a transition of direction from a planned community to a theme park resort. Following the opening of the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom were opened in 1989 and 1998.

Throughout the progression of this ISP, I will continue to explore the impacts of “Imagineering” in Walt Disney World. Walt Disney Imagineering is the research and development section of the Walt Disney company that is in charge of the creation, design, and construction of the Disney parks and attractions. Imagineers are the engineers, illustrators, architects, lighting designers, electricians, and show writers that compose of the Imagineering department. The term was coined by Alcoa in 1940s as a combination of the words “Imagination” and “Engineering”.
